Ultrabooks are the Windows answer to the Macbook Air and will set the standards for the next generation of notebooks. The incredibly thin new Asus Zenbook comes in two formats the Zenbook UX 21E (with either i3, i5 or i7 processor) and the Zenbook UX 31E (with either i5 or i7 processor).

It was clearly inspired by the Macbook Air but has better specs and sells for $200 less and is also an improvement on the Acer S3 ultrabook.

It would also make a great Christmas gift for some lucky person ! Maybe me? (But only if I buy myself one :-(.)

Engadget says "as stunning in person as it is in the press shots." It's arguably faster than the Macbook Air, and battery life is comparable. "It offers the highest-res display we've seen in an Ultrabook and the sound quality is disarmingly good. .... For now this is the Ultrabook to beat."

PCMag says "The Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 is the clear leader in the nascent ultrabook category, with better overall performance and battery life than any competitor. It also has a brilliant display, superb sound, and solid construction"
Well, the answer is yes, but only just. You will find it very difficult to find a NEW netbook for under $200 but there are plenty of used or refurbished netbooks available. The problem with used netbooks is, of course, that they tend to be last year's models. So the used netbooks available for under $200 will have Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter software on them.

Asus Disney Netpal Netbook for Kids

Netbooks are better for kids than tablets. They are more robust and they have a lid that protects the screen. Netbooks designed specifically for kids are even better and make a great Christmas gift.

With the Disney Netpal, Asus have made computing fun and safe for kids.

It comes in two colors - Princess Pink and Magic Blue
and is a lot more inviting for kids than a plain black box. It is also equipped with safety features to prevent them accessing stuff on the Internet that they shouldn't.

Asus has also signed a contract with Disney to make lots of Disney content available via the Netpal. You also don't need to be a computer geek to use it as the browser and email have already been set up with the necessary parental controls to make using the Internet safe and easy.

It also features a range of applications designed just for kids — Disney Pix for editing/creating photos, Disney Mix, and Radio Disney with live streaming and a Mickey-shaped webcam lens.

The design is durable and child-friendly and is reinforced with a spill-proof keyboard, plus ShockShield Data Protection to prevent data loss in the event of impacts.

The battery cannot be removed by kids thus avoiding any electrical danger.

The batteries stay charged for up to 5 hours.

Disney Desktop

Disney Desktop lets your children dress their desktops with themes from Cars, Club Penguin, Disney Classic Characters, Disney Fairies, Disney Princess, Vintage Mickey Mouse, Toy Story, WALL-E, Hannah Montana, and Jonas Brothers!

Disney Applications and Games

Disney Mix lets kids manage their media, Disney Pix edits/creates photos and Radio Disney provides live streaming. The Netpal also includes a memory game, driving game, and photo scrapbook.

Disney Pix

Disney Pix lets kids put their faces on dancing bodies and accessorize with glasses, hats and more before sharing with friends.

Durable, Kid-friendly Design

The reinforced mechanical design withstands significant abuse, and the spill-proof keyboard protects against liquid spills.
Watch the VIDEO of the unpacking of the Eee pad below to get a clear idea of what it looks like.

Asus are well-known for their netbooks but so far have not done much in the world of tablets. The Eee Pad changes all that, by being both a netbook and a tablet.

Tablets have always had the disadvantage of being flat and having a screen that it exposed to the elements. With the Eee Pad you get the chance to fold your tablet up, thus protecting the screen, which seems to us here at USANetbooks to be an excellent idea.

The Transformer is different from other tablets in that it has what Asus call an "optional docking station". This gives you a full QWERTY keyboard with unique Android Function keys, turning the Eee Pad Transformer tablet into a netbook.

The docking station increases the Transformer’s 9.5 hours of battery life up to 16 hours, so you can use it all day.

The Eee Pad is in fact another Honeycomb tablet, with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC, 1GB of LPDDR2 memory, 16GB of NAND on-board and a WiFi radio.

If you are looking for an Android tablet then the Eee Pad Transformer is certainly worth a closer look. The actual tablet part is around $380 for 16GB WiFi which is around $100 less than the iPad - if you want the optional docking station with keyboard that will cost an extra $120 (still not cheap - but cheaper) - you may wish to wait until after Christmas to see if you can pick up a bargain.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 - Click image for further details from Amazon

In addition to the lower price Asus also made a quality product that is very comfortable to hold and use.

A benefit of not being made of aluminum is I'm not as afraid to set the Eee Pad down on a table as I am the iPad. It feels more rugged, more comfrotable than the iPad. Asus has also improved the quality of the display on the netbook side, with an IPS panel that guarantees image quality and good viewing angles, offering 10.1".

The Eee Padalso has two cameras (1.2 MP that faces forward and 5 MP to the rear ) 2 small speakers, a volume rocker, headphone port, mini HDMI out and microSD slot.

The docking station docks via a 40-pin ASUS dock connector along the bottom edge. There is also a USB to AC adapter for charging the pad.

All in all an excellent tablet / netbook albeit I stil find them a bit onthe expensive side, but I am well-known for being a cheapskate.

In addition there is the big advantage of Windows 7 Home Premium preloaded (netbooks often just have Windows Starter - which many people say is just not good enough - some go as far as to call it 'crimpware'), 2 GB of RAM, and an AMD C-Series Processor C-50.

The Acer Aspire One AO722-BZ454 is ideal for consumers and professionals alike.

Good Points

The touchpad supports enhanced mouse functionality such as page flip controls, circular motion scrolling, and pinch action zoom. Some users say this touchpad with the full-sized Acer keyboard gives ideal keyboard and touchpad functionality.
One HDMI output port with support for HDCP so you can instantly stream the full 1366 x 768 resolution to an external HD monitor for a better viewing experience.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system, lots of other cheap netbooks and laptops only offer Windows 7 Starter. A 64-bit OS lets you multitask more efficiently and run more powerful software.

Battery lifetime 4.5 to 5 hours on ‘balanced’ setting, and 7-8 hours in ‘power saver’ mode.
Acer power adapters are compact with a power cord that is 8 feet long, and with prongs that you can rotate so that other devices are not blocked from the power point.

Weak Points
No built-in Bluetooth – but relatively inexpensive USB Bluetooth adapters can be used.
There is a built-in Wi-Fi card, so you can get Internet access anywhere there is a wireless connection.
An extra 2 GB of RAM would be helpful but you can get a 2 GB memory upgrade for around $30-$40.

Conclusion
The Acer Aspire One AO722-BZ454 is one of the best mid-sized laptops and currently sells on Amazon (one of the cheapest places available) for around $275-$295.

Who Should Buy It?
People who travel a lot and students. It is small and lightweight, yet powerful.
The components are as you would expect. It features one of Intel's 1.5GHz latest dual-core Atom N550 processors, 1GB of DDR3 RAM that can be upgraded to 2GB, Windows 7, and the dual-core technology means it is faster when running multiple applications than a single-core processor would be.

The hard disk is a generous 250GB and the 10.1in 1,024 x 600 matte-finish screen is excellent and and clear. What really impresses however is the range of connections you get. 2 x USB 3 ports 1 x USB 2 port, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11bgn Wi-Fi. The battery is also impressive - a six-cell 5,200mAh that can get between 9 and 12 hours depending on use.
Will it use solar panels ? Yes. Will it be cheap? Well, that depends on your definition of cheap - $399 US is the expected price in the USA. It will also be available in Russia and Africa (not Europe?). If you are not too keen on a solar-powered netbook but are looking for one of the best netbooks for 2011 scroll to the bottom of the page.

Samsung NC215S Solar-Powered Netbook

Samsung says the solar panel on the back of the lid will provide around 1 hour of computing time for 2 hours charging time in direct sunlight. It is fitted with a battery that can provide up to 14.5 hours of operating time, less if you use intensive graphics applications. The NC215S features an Intel Atom N570 1.66 GHz dual-core processor with integrated graphics that draws a maximum of 8.5 Watts. It also has recyclable parts.

It also offers a ”Sleep-and-Charge” USB port that charges mobile devices even if you put the netbook to sleep or turn it off. The solar panel will also provide power if the battery is depleted.

It has a 10.1″ 1024 x 600 display with a matte finish (hooray!) to reduce glare. Samsung also says it is 50% brighter than competing netbooks, so it may even be usable out in the sun.

Other specs. - 1GB of RAM, and a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor.

So if you are planning going for a walk or if you just like the idea of free electricity then this new Samsung is certainly worth a look.

Things to bear in mind - this solar-powered netbook is designed to run using the battery, the solar panels act as a solar charger to recharge the battery not for actually using the netbook. Apparently you can also charge other stuff using the solar panels on the netbook.

Looking for the best netbook for 2011 ?

If you are on a budget or just don't want to spend too much on a netbook that you only intend to use occasionally then wesuggest the minimum required for a Netbook in 2011 is an Intel Atom Single-core N455 Processor, 1GB DDR3 RAM at least, a 160GB hard drive, Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics, 8 hours of battery life and Windows 7 Starter. Those are the basics and may well be enough but if you intend doing multimedia work and gaming applications then you need something a bit more powerful such as an 11.6 or 12.1 display, higher screen resolutions, Dual-core processor and better graphics hardware, such as Nvidia’s Ion GPU.

Asus Eee PC X101 Cheap Netbook

It will be offered with either Windows 7 or Intel's MeeGo and the MeeGO version will cost under $200. In many ways it is reminiscent of the 11" MacBook Air, except it is around 80% cheaper! The Eee PC X101 is a cheap entry-level netbook that is nevertheless very high quality.

It is based around an Intel Atom N435 Oak Trail (1.33 GHz) processor with integrated GMA 60 graphics chip and a WiFi connection, with a choice of HDD or SSD configurations, with the SSD you get the same instant-on experience as with the iPad 2 and Apple MacBook Air. It is just 17.6mm thick and weighs just under 1 kg, so very lightweight for carrying around.

It could be that the success of tablets has forced netbook manufacturers to look again at their prices, which I ahve always found a bit excessive, but at under 200 dollars the Eee PC X101 offers great value for netbook buyers.

The launch date for the Eee PC X101 is not known yet but Asus tend to just make them available at places like Amazon without a great deal of forewarning so you just need to check to see if they are there yet - Amazon.
Reviews

The Toshiba NB505 netbook gets an average of 4.5 stars out of 5. Here are some opinions.

"A great little netbook, not for gamers or techies. But perfect for the Internet, email, facebook and everyday stuff or when you're on the move and want to keep in touch. Small and lightweight. More than fast enough. I like it a lot."

"I have had this Toshiba netbook for 4 months and am very happy with it. It is now my primary computer. Lightweight, it fits into a bag or backpack, but is very sturdy. I am not disappointed. The Office Starter and Windows 7 Starter are adequate for my needs and I have not needed to upgrade. I did add another 1 GB of memory, which was very easy. A good buy for the money."

"I love it. The display is crisp, the webcam is as good as my Logitech 9000. The keyboard is firm and solid, no sticking keys. I use it with a wireless mouse. It connected to my wireless network no problem and zipped along at maximum speed."
It is sold with a nice blue Easy Grip Finish on the lid, designed to prevent your netbook from slipping out of your hand and ending up on the floor ! Yes, it does happen apparently with the more glossy netbooks.
The mini NB 505 N508BL is powered by an Intel Atom N455 (1.66 GHz) processor, and has the standard netbook screen of a 10.1 inch WSVGA display with 1 GB Memory and a 250 GB hard drive. The screen is not the largest you can find for a netbook but it does have the advantage of keeping the price down.

The 250 GB hard disk drive is fitted with a protective system using integrated 3D impact sensor which detects freefalls, vibrations and shocks.

The all round performance and reliability is good.

The operating system is Microsoft’s Windows 7 Starter operating system.
Connections are through an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity and a very useful multi in one media card reader, the an Ethernet LAN, Integrated web camera, 3 USB ports, standard VGA port, 1 x microphone jack and a 1 x headphone jack.
First things first, you won't be able to buy one for this Christmas as they are still in beta and Chrome netbooks for the public are not expected until early 2011, so if you are looking for a netbook for Christmas then check out here netbook for Christmas or you can directly check out one of the top selling netbooks on Amazon.

So what is Google Chrome ? Chrome is an operating system that is based on Linux, but it does not operate like Windows - as it is in fact a Web browser that boots your PC. So instead of botting up your PC then clicking on a browser to get on the Internet, a Chrome netbok will boot up directly with an Internet browser and get you straight onto the Internet.

You can't install software on a Chrome netbook, but like a machine with an iPhone / iPad app functionality, Chrome netbooks will extend the functionality via Chrome apps. The result should be a faster experience, optimized for people who use their netbooks on the go and get their programs from the 'cloud' i.e. the Internet.

The Chrome netbook appears to be somewhere between a Windows or Linux-based device, and tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Apple iPad. It should look like a traditional netbook, with the instant-on, browser-centric apps environment of a tablet.

What most people are interested in of course is how much a Chrome netbook will cost and whether there will be a monthly fee associated with the use of a specific wireless carrier to provide mobile Web access. At the moment you can get the cheaper netbooks for less than $200 and browse the web for free. Google will need to make the price attractive if it is to entice customers into their web.

If you have come here by chance and were in fact looking for a netbook for the kids this Christmas then check out these two from Dell and Disney - netbooks for kids or get more info. from Amazon on the Disney Netpal by ASUS
It is also very eye-catching with its lattice-work shell. More importantly perhaps you get 11 hours battery life thanks to the ASUS Super Hybrid Engine and the new Intel Atom N450 processor.
It is also very comfortable to use thanks to its large palm rest, and multi-touch trackpad.
It 250GB Hard Disk offers plenty of storage and its 1GB system memory is adequate but can be upgraded to 2GB (you can never have too much memory - but immense hard disks are not necessary).

Wi-Fi networking and Bluetooth 2.1 ensure wireless mobility. It is sold with Windows 7 Starter but if possible you would be better getting ithis upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium (check and get it done before you buy if possible for the extra $50). It is also fitted with an integrated webcam and microphone for chatting if you are the chatty type !

The new Asus Eee PC 1015PN Netbook with 1.5 GHz Dual Core Intel Atom N550 Processor which is possibly one of the best netbooks currently available, is advertised running both the starter and the Home premium version, but if you don't specify which you want you will probably get the sstater version by default. So make sure you specify that you want the Home Preium version before you part with any cash - if you can afford it.

According to Asus the Eee PC1015PN is a major change from other netbooks. Most netbooks installa a single core Atom processor. The Eee PC1015PN on the other hand has a Intel Atom N550 dual core processor, which delivers speeds 23% faster at least than single core processor netbooks (according to Asus again).

Asus Lamborghini VX6 Fast Netbook

Obviously, by naming their Netbooks after famous sports cars Asus and Acer, the two main netbook makers, are attempting to appeal to the sports car speed freak enthusiast with a fair amount of money to invest in a netbook, as they are not the cheapest Netrbooks on the market. The Acer Ferrari is available in Ferrari red, the Lamborghini however is available in any color as long as it's black or white.

The Lamborghini VX6 is designed as an above-average entry-level mobile computer, as such it makes use of an Atom D dual-core CPU and a high-quality screen. For a netbook screen it is quite large, with a diagonal measurement of 12.1 inches. Most netbooks go for a 10.1 inch screen.

As far as speed is concerned the Asus Lamborgini is based on the Atom D525 CPU, a dual-core with a clock speed of 1.83 GHz. In addition, the chip is combined with the NVIDIA ION 2 graphics processing unit, which is fully capable of playing HD videos and will make full use of the LED-backlit display with a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels.

The Asus Lamborghini also has 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 250GB hard disk, USB 3.0 connectivity (USB 3 is said to be 10 times faster than USB 2), Ethernet, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, and a battery life of up to 6 hours.

It should be said however that the Asus Lamborghini is essentially the same as the Asus Eee PC 1215N with a different and presumably more glamorous design to appeal to the design-conscious, - so if you are looking for a fast netbook without the extra price you will be paying for the Lamborghini branding then check out the EEE PC 1215N

The Asus Lamborghini VX6 is now available for pre-order, at a price of US$ 699, which is not cheap for a netbook. The operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 home Premium which is much better than the Starter version.
Tips
Uninstall the Google Toolbar and McAfee and other useless software, once you have done that it is pretty fast.
Thinner than D150, very light
Keyboard small but still usable

Touchpad not so good, gesture for scroll doesn't always work .
Screen glossy, but usable. Some people don't like glossy screens - but manufacturers love them ! We can only assume they are cheaper to make.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-EU1X-BK 10.1-Inch
According to Asus, at less than 2.5lbs, the 1005HA-E is the perfect travel companion. But if you can then get the version with the longer battery life - 4 hours is not long enough. Also the 0.3 webcam is not really good enough if the cam is important to you best go for something with a better cam. Price is around $270.
If you are looking for a fast netbook the you will soon have a new one to consider the Asus Eee PC 1215N. This will certainly be one the fastest netbooks money can buy if not the fastest. It is expected to be available on August 23.

Asus is of course the company that invented the netbook, but it has been losing market share to Acer, maybe the PC 1215N will bring back some of that market share to Asus. Not only is it fast at 1.8 GHz, it also has a 12.1" screen described as "massive", well in some domains 12.1" might be considered massive but on a computer it is barely adequate, but of course this is a netbook so compared to 10" I guess it looks quite big.

The NB30 weighs just 1.3kg but is surprisingly solid. Samsung designed it with a protective 'S' pattern over the entire outer case, thus creating a robust finish. The matte black finish is a relief from all those shiny black models and it is also spill-proof and doesn't scratch easily.

Samsung has fitted a drop-protected 160GB SATA hard drive with a free-fall sensor, which detects if it is falling and locks the drive and backs up your data at the same time, which is pretty neat ! Although it is only the hard drive that is drop protected.

Samsung has built the NB30 on a very small 10.1in chassis to make it extremely portable but unfortunately the battery sticks out and adds half an inch in height to the back of the netbook.

But at least you get a six-cell battery with up to 11 hours of power, a big bonus.

The keyboard is solid and makes typing quite a pleasant experience on such a small netbook.

The NB30 features Intel's 'Pine Trail' Atom N450 running at 1.66GHz, which is pretty good for everyday tasks but unfortunately only has 1GB of RAM, which can make it slow at times.

The 1,024 x 600 backlit LED display is excellent for such a small netbook and there are no nasty reflections to contend with !

The NB30 features 2 x 1.5W speakers at the bottom front of the unit, which do sound a bit tinny, but the headphone jack lets you take advantage of the high-definition audio playback.

All in all the NB30 is fine but don't expect high-end gaming from it.

It has three USB ports, a 3-in-1 card slot and VGA out, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and an embedded webcam.

Conclusion - The NB30 is one of the best netbooks available it is a solid netbook with long battery life; excellent display; good value for money, but there is only one memory slot and the battery sticks out.

For a better alternative to the NB30 take a look at the Samsung NB30 Pro

It looks the same as the NB30 but it has Windows 7 Professional instead of Windows Starter Pack and is fitted with up to 2GB of memory.

The rest of the specs are the same - a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 10.1 inch, intel GMA 3150 graphics, 160GB hard drive, 1024 x 600 pixel display, VGA webcam, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and 6 cell battery.

The semi-rugged case design is the same as are the spill-resistant keyboard, and the hard drive sensor that parks the HDD spindle if you drop the computer. As the Samsung NB30 was designed for the business user looking for something better than an average netbook, makes sense to have Windows 7 Professional instead of Windows 7 Starter Edition.

The NB30 costs around $340 the NB30 Pro should be available soon for around $519.
People often want to know which is the best netbook available. Unfortunately that is not an easy question to answer, for one very good reason - they are changing all the time. What is the best netbook now will probably not be the best netbook in 3 months' time. Computers in general and netbooks in particular are constantly evolving and they quickly become out of date.

Back in November MSI announced the arrival of what is probably one of the best netbooks currently on the market - the Wind12 U230 series. There are two different models of the the MSI Wind12, the U230-033, and the U230-040.

Both have 2GB of DDR2, a 6 cell battery, and Windows 7 Home Premium as standard. The fact that they have Windows 7 Home Premium installed is a very good factor, as the Windows 7 Starter is really not good enough. They also have as standard an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card and a 1.3 megapixel webcam, HDMI port, and 3 USB 2.0 ports.

The U230-033 features an Athlon Neo MV-40 with a 250GB SATA drive, the U230-040 has an Athlon X2 L335 and a 320GB SATA drive. They both have a 12.1? LCD (at 1366×768) which is on the large side for a netbook, and the new EDS Keyboard with larger keys.

Both systems are now on sale with the U230-033 selling for $429.99, and the faster U230-040 selling for $479.99. MSI U230-040US 12.1-Inch Netbook - 4 Hour Battery Life

The Wind12 is not the cheapest netbook around but then it's not the most expensive either but it is much more powerful than a lot of them.

Pros:
+Dual core AMD CPU
+Lightweight and well made
+Larger keyboard
+Rather large touch pad
+Small, portable but powerful

Cons:
-Short battery life
-Glossy screen

In one survey the U230 easily beat the Asus 1201N in almost every single benchmark.

MSI Wind12 U230 ultra-thin laptop specifications :
•12.1-inch (1366×768) display
•2GB of RAM
•Athlon Neo MV-40 or Athlon X2 L335 processor
•250GB/320GB hard drive
•6-cell battery.
Samsung claim that the N150 is the first 4G netbook computer in the world, and who are we to argue? What is 4G ? If you never really understood what 3G was, and if you are wondering whatever happened to 2G then don't worry, you are not alone.
